Thirty five year old Jharoka Devi, living with her family comprising of six children and husband in Indira Awaas Colony of Jai Prakash Nagar (FCI) Godown Road, Phoolwarisarif Block in Patna in the state of Bihar died giving birth to her seventh child.
Her death could have been prevented:
Her death could have been prevented:
- If the ANM had correctly diagnosed her to be nine months pregnant instead of six months;
- If the ANM had shared with her that she was at high risk as she had already given birth to six children;
- If the ANM had asked her medical history and checked her as throughout her pregnancy she had periodically bled;
- If an ambulance was available to take her to the hospital which could have provided her the service that she needed, instead of being pushed by her husband in a handcart to go to the nearest PHC, which was 3 kms away;
- If a doctor would have been available in the PHC to take care of her; instead she was refered
- If the private hospital could have waived the fees and provided her with the services she desperately needed to survive;
- If a Medical Officer would have been available in the Patna District Hospital where she eventually was shifted to provide her the care she deserved;
For us it is important to highlight these stories through our observatory and serve as an information, education and communication hub; this observatory helps and support the actions and interventions by creating an interface for sharing experiences of the most marginalised communities, individuals and women in particular, with associations, networks, policy planners, programme implementer's, researchers, at the national as well as international level.
