The death of a woman after delivering a child has brought to fore Jharkhand’s poor maternal health status. Chandramuni Kumari, a tribal resident of Ranchi’s Namkum, died on February 20 after delivering a healthy girl child.

Ironically, she was one of Jharkhand’s 40,964 Sahiyyas, who are Accredited Social Health Activist for assisting pregnant women.

Goa and Manipur may have knocked Kerala off the pedestal, but at 12 deaths among children less than one year of age per 1,000 live births, Kerala still has an enviably low infant mortality rate (IMR); it is far below India’s average of 42. Yet, for years, the southern State has been unable to reduce the mortality rate further to a single-digit figure to become comparable with the developed countries. Kerala has always been at the forefront in setting the benchmark for almost all the health indices.Source: The Hindu
