114 kids given wrong vaccine instead of polio drops

At least 114 children were hospitalised in Hooghly district after they were mistakenly given Hepatitis B vaccine orally instead of pulse polio drops.

Six persons were suspended for the lapse that triggered protests with angry villagers locking up health workers.

Sunday was pulse polio day so parents had taken their children to the polio booth at the Khatul village under Arambagh sub-division, official sources said.

Diarrhoea and lower respiratory infection (LRI), too, have declined but still figure along with preterm birth complications among the top three causes of years lost to disability and mortality in the region in 2010

Many Reports suggest that the rate of breastfeeding is low in the state due to lack of information, traditional belief in pre-lacteal feeding and substituting breast milk with other local and commercial baby food products. About 50.6 per cent mothers in the state breastfeed their babies.

Sunita, a young woman in her fourth month of pregnancy in rural Odisha, suddenly discovered that she was bleeding profusely. It took her a while to understand that the situation was serious and called her husband Ramesh. He rushed home from work. They realized they needed to go to a hospital, but discovered they did not have enough money. After spending precious time trying to borrow money, they managed to hire an auto-rickshaw and reached the hospital. But it was too late. There were no doctors or nurses available and Sunita died.

Malnutrition deaths haunt Attappadi

Malnutrition deaths have continued to haunt the tribal hamlet of Attapadi if the figures disclosed in a survey are any indication. It revealed that 483 tribals at Agali were suffering from malnutrition and anaemia.
